Women and ADHD: Finding Clarity and Renewal at Renewing Mindsets in Philadelphia and the Main Line

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by challenges with focusing, sitting still, controlling impulses and organizing tasks. While historically viewed as mainly impacting boys and men, we now recognize that

Targeted ADHD treatment begins with accurate diagnosis. Our evidence-based Philadelphia assessments get you real solutions.

ADHD affects women equally. However, it frequently goes undetected and undertreated in women, leading to impaired functioning across domains.

At Renewing Mindsets, we specialize in comprehensive ADHD testing and tailored treatment for women and girls. Our team of female ADHD specialists takes the time to thoroughly evaluate the unique presentations of ADHD in women. We then craft integrative treatment plans to provide clarity, validation and pathways to reaching one’s potential.

Specialized ADHD Testing for Women

High-quality ADHD testing requires a specialized approach in females because symptoms often manifest differently than in males. While boys tend to exhibit outward hyperactivity and behavioral issues, women and girls commonly struggle more with:

  • Trouble focusing, forgetfulness and disorganization

  • Restlessness, mental frenzy and difficulty finishing tasks

  • Low motivation, severe procrastination

  • Emotional sensitivity, moodiness and stress overwhelm

Our ADHD specialists have extensive expertise accurately identifying and diagnosing the nuanced ways ADHD affects women and girls. We conduct multi-faceted evaluations incorporating clinical interviews, rating scales, cognitive testing and third-party perspectives. This comprehensive process leads to proper diagnosis so that women don't suffer without targeted treatment.

Integrative Treatment Tailored to Women’s Needs

Once diagnosed, we develop holistic treatment plans aligned with each woman’s unique symptom profile, lifestyle and goals. While medication is often included, our approach addresses the whole woman through:

Medication Management - We help find optimal ADHD medications and dosing to minimize side effects. We carefully track progress over time.

Lifestyle Adjustments - We offer guidance on sleep, nutrition, exercise and stress reduction tailored to the ADHD brain to enhance daily functioning.

Psychotherapy - We address ADHD-related issues like negative thought patterns, emotional dysregulation, disorganization and relationship problems through approaches like CBT and emotion-focused therapy.

ADHD Coaching - We teach organization strategies, run educational groups, and provide parenting guidance to help women capitalize on strengths and compensate for deficits.

Holistic Wellness - We encourage activities like mindfulness, yoga, nature time, massage and creative expression to support healing on all levels.

By combining evidence-based treatments with compassionate support, we empower women to understand, manage and thrive with ADHD.

Common Signs of ADHD in Women and Girls

While ADHD symptoms overlap between genders, certain characteristics are more frequently seen in females. Consider an ADHD evaluation if you relate to several of these:

  • Extreme distractibility, disorganization and forgetfulness

  • Restlessness and feeling internally rushed

  • Difficulty completing tasks and following through

  • Chronic lateness

  • Frequently misplacing items

  • Intense emotional sensitivity and mood swings

  • Easily overwhelmed by stress

  • Impulse shopping/spending or substance misuse

  • Low motivation and severe procrastination

  • Poor sleep and neglecting self-care

  • Relationship conflicts over reliability

If these symptoms significantly impair work, relationships or daily life, testing can uncover the root causes and point toward solutions. Our compassionate specialists will listen to your struggles and help you find answers, validation and relief.

Schedule an Appointmet
  • What is the soonest that I can be seen?
The fastest way to be seen is through a virtual session, which we can typically schedule within 1-3 days. We can start both the psychiatric evaluation and the ADHD comprehensive assessment virtually. The first part of the ADHD assessment, the psychiatric evaluation, will be done virtually, and then you can come into the office for in-person testing within the next few days. Alternatively, you have the option to complete the entire ADHD comprehensive assessment in one visit to our office.
  • Do you assist with accommodations for school and referral letters?
Yes, we do. At Renewing Mindsets, we assist with accommodations for school, referral letters, and psychiatric evaluation letters for individuals who have been tested with us and meet the diagnosis criteria. We have helped our clients with accommodation letters for exams such as the LSAT for law school, the MCAT for medical school, the NCLEX for nursing school, as well as the NBME and the MBE (Multistate Bar Examination). Additionally, we write accommodation letters for individuals needing workplace accommodations.
  • How Does ADHD testing work?
For individuals seeking clarity on ADHD symptoms, adhd diagnosis, or requiring accommodations, our ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation is recommended and offers a thorough assessment that includes both virtual and in-person psychiatric evaluations, followed by in-person computerized ADHD testing. ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation ($460): Includes psychiatric evaluation with computerized TOVA testing. Evaluations can be conducted virtually and in person. This is essential for those seeking an ADHD diagnosis, accommodation, or treatment planning. Standardized ADHD Testing ($255): The purpose of T.O.V.A. (Test of Variables of Attention) testing is to objectively assess attention-related difficulties, such as those associated with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). This does not include a diagnosis but is to accompany a previous provider's specific request for diagnostic testing only. Accommodations: To obtain ADHD accommodations, a comprehensive ADHD evaluation is necessary, and we provide accommodation letters for an additional fee of $95.
  • I was previously diagnosed. Will you manage my treatment and medication?
Currently no, we do not manage ongoing treatment and medication for previously diagnosed individuals. Our focus is primarily on conducting ADHD evaluations and ensuring availability for our new patients seeking treatment management.
  • Do you accept insurance?
Hi, thank you for reaching out to Renewing Mindsets. We are an out-of-network provider and do not accept insurance for ADHD testing. However, we strive to keep our services affordable, with pricing starting at $95. We accept HSA, FSA, debit, and credit card payments. Additionally, we can create a superbill that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. You can view our appointment availability and detailed pricing on our "Schedule an Appointment" section of the website.
