Navigating ADHD: Understanding and Confronting the Challenges

At Renewing Mindsets, we recognize the multifaceted nature of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its profound impact on individuals' lives. Through our specialized ADHD testing and tailored treatment services in Philadelphia, on the Main Line, and surrounding areas, we're dedicated to providing comprehensive support for those affected by ADHD.

Understanding ADHD

ADHD encompasses three core symptom categories:

  1. Inattention: Struggles with focus, organization, and forgetfulness.

  2. Hyperactivity: Restlessness, excessive talking, and impulsive behavior.

  3. Impulsivity: Difficulty controlling impulses and waiting turns.

These symptoms significantly impair functioning across various settings, including school, work, and home. Seeking evaluation by an ADHD specialist is crucial to differentiate ADHD from other conditions and initiate appropriate treatment.

The Impact of Untreated ADHD

Untreated ADHD can lead to numerous negative consequences, such as academic difficulties, employment challenges, relationship issues, and increased risks of substance abuse and mental health disorders. Seeking treatment is a courageous step towards reclaiming control over one's life.

ADHD Testing and ADHD Diagnosis

Accurate diagnosis is the cornerstone of effective ADHD management. At Renewing Mindsets, our comprehensive ADHD evaluations involve:

  • Clinical Interviews: Thorough assessments of health history, symptoms, and challenges.

  • Standardized Testing: Formal evaluations of attention span, memory, and problem-solving skills.

  • Behavioral Observations: Observing activity levels and focus during testing sessions.

  • Questionnaires: Gathering insights from various stakeholders using scaling tools.

  • Medical Review: Physical exams and lab work to rule out other potential causes.

  • Mental Health Screening: Assessing for co-occurring mood disorders and learning disabilities.

Our experienced clinicians ensure a meticulous evaluation process, conducted either in-person or via telehealth, to accommodate individual needs.

ADHD Treatment That Works

Effective treatment strategies for ADHD may include:

  • Medication Management: Tailored medication regimens to manage symptoms effectively.

  • Psychotherapy: Cognitive behavioral therapy to develop coping strategies and organizational skills.

  • ADHD Coaching: Establishing routines, setting goals, and providing accountability.

  • Skills Training: Learning techniques to improve focus, manage stress, and enhance self-confidence.

  • Treatment of Co-occurring Disorders: Addressing conditions such as anxiety, depression, and learning disabilities.

  • Lifestyle Modifications: Optimizing nutrition, exercise, and productivity strategies.

Our multidisciplinary team crafts personalized treatment plans tailored to each individual's needs, goals, and preferences.

ADHD Treatment Considerations

Selecting the most suitable treatment approach involves careful consideration of factors such as target symptoms, medication efficacy, therapy preferences, and lifestyle adjustments. Our ADHD specialists collaborate with patients to identify optimal treatment strategies that align with their unique circumstances.

ADHD in Women and Girls

While ADHD affects individuals of all genders, females often exhibit subtler symptoms, such as inner restlessness and emotional sensitivity. Recognizing these differences is crucial to providing appropriate support and intervention for women and girls with ADHD.

Signs of ADHD in Children

Early identification of ADHD symptoms in children is vital for initiating timely intervention. Common signs may include constant fidgeting, difficulty waiting turns, and forgetfulness. Our child and adolescent mental health professionals specialize in assessing and treating young patients with ADHD.

ADHD Treatment Options for Children

Treating ADHD in children may involve parent training, school support, social skills training, medication management, behavioral therapy, and ADHD coaching. These interventions empower children to gain control over disruptive symptoms and thrive academically and socially.

Finding an ADHD Specialist in Philadelphia

Selecting an ADHD specialist requires consideration of factors such as expertise, comprehensive care, collaboration, personalized treatment, and ongoing support. At Renewing Mindsets, our ADHD specialists embody these qualities, providing patients with the skills, support, and solutions needed to navigate ADHD effectively.

  • What is the soonest that I can be seen?
The fastest way to be seen is through a virtual session, which we can typically schedule within 1-3 days. We can start both the psychiatric evaluation and the ADHD comprehensive assessment virtually. The first part of the ADHD assessment, the psychiatric evaluation, will be done virtually, and then you can come into the office for in-person testing within the next few days. Alternatively, you have the option to complete the entire ADHD comprehensive assessment in one visit to our office.
  • Do you assist with accommodations for school and referral letters?
Yes, we do. At Renewing Mindsets, we assist with accommodations for school, referral letters, and psychiatric evaluation letters for individuals who have been tested with us and meet the diagnosis criteria. We have helped our clients with accommodation letters for exams such as the LSAT for law school, the MCAT for medical school, the NCLEX for nursing school, as well as the NBME and the MBE (Multistate Bar Examination). Additionally, we write accommodation letters for individuals needing workplace accommodations.
  • How Does ADHD testing work?
For individuals seeking clarity on ADHD symptoms, adhd diagnosis, or requiring accommodations, our ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation is recommended and offers a thorough assessment that includes both virtual and in-person psychiatric evaluations, followed by in-person computerized ADHD testing. ADHD Comprehensive Evaluation ($460): Includes psychiatric evaluation with computerized TOVA testing. Evaluations can be conducted virtually and in person. This is essential for those seeking an ADHD diagnosis, accommodation, or treatment planning. Standardized ADHD Testing ($255): The purpose of T.O.V.A. (Test of Variables of Attention) testing is to objectively assess attention-related difficulties, such as those associated with ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). This does not include a diagnosis but is to accompany a previous provider's specific request for diagnostic testing only. Accommodations: To obtain ADHD accommodations, a comprehensive ADHD evaluation is necessary, and we provide accommodation letters for an additional fee of $95.
  • I was previously diagnosed. Will you manage my treatment and medication?
Currently no, we do not manage ongoing treatment and medication for previously diagnosed individuals. Our focus is primarily on conducting ADHD evaluations and ensuring availability for our new patients seeking treatment management.
  • Do you accept insurance?
Hi, thank you for reaching out to Renewing Mindsets. We are an out-of-network provider and do not accept insurance for ADHD testing. However, we strive to keep our services affordable, with pricing starting at $95. We accept HSA, FSA, debit, and credit card payments. Additionally, we can create a superbill that you can submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement. You can view our appointment availability and detailed pricing on our "Schedule an Appointment" section of the website.
